The Dogchild
The Dogchild is an unpublished short story by the British writer Roald Dahl (1916–1990), written in 1948. It is a dark parable about human cruelty. The action takes place in World War II . Roald Dahl describes in great detail, in an unmistakable manner, a vengeful German family who is raising an abandoned Russian orphan boy. The family treats the boy in an inhuman way as if he were a dog. The boy grows up with the dog in the dog kennel. Only the dog and the boy exude warmth, cordiality and dignity.
Donald Sturrock (* 1961) considers Dahl's as yet unpublished short story The Dogchild to be the best of Dahl's stories in which cruelty plays an essential role.
