The Joy of Painting is a television painting course in 403 parts (31 seasons of 13 episodes each) moderated by the artist Bob Ross . In each episode, Ross paints one picture in oil using the wet-on-wet technique . The individual episodes each bear the name of the painting to be painted, such as New Day's Dawn , Waterfall in the Woods or Quiet Mountain Lake .

Sequence of events

At the beginning of a broadcast, the moderator always greets the viewer with the words “Hi, welcome back!” (In German: “Hello, welcome back”), supplemented by “I'm certainly glad you could join us today!” : "I am glad that you can / can be there again today"). While the moderator briefly explains what kind of motif should be painted in the respective episode and how he may have already prepared the canvas, the viewer is shown the color names that he needs to replicate or paint along with the day motif. While the presenter brings the motif onto the canvas with oil paints using his special wet-on-wet technique, he explains to the audience in a calm, gentle voice how they can paint the motif of the day themselves, and motivates them to create their own personal world to paint in which everything is allowed and nothing is wrong.

In commenting on the work processes, he uses recurring sentence components such as "We don't make mistakes here, just happy little accidents" when the brush slips, and "Beat the devil out of it" when a brush is shaken dry or "Everyone needs a friend “When a second tree is added to a single tree. Other typical idioms are phrases like “a happy little cloud that lives right here” or “a happy little tree”.

In addition to Ross' language and painting style, his distinctive Afro look is his personal trademark. When the picture is finished, the presenter says goodbye to the audience at the end of each program with the sentence “From all of us here: I'd like to wish you happy painting and God bless, my friend!” (In German: “ From all of us here: I wish you a happy painting and God's blessings, my friends! ”). In some episodes, Bob Ross did not paint himself, but had invited guests to paint a picture. Among other things, his son could also be seen here. He also occasionally shared his experiences with animals (e.g. a bird or a squirrel), which he had taken in for care, with short film recordings.

success

The program was broadcast internationally in many countries, including Germany. When broadcasting in Germany, the moderator's original English sound is not dubbed, nor is it translated using subtitles. Due to its continued popularity, the show is still regularly repeated since 2001. On German television, the reruns are currently (2018) on the channel ARD-alpha . Only seasons 15 to 31 are shown (from the years 1988 to 1994), because the first 14 seasons from 1983 to 1987 are considered unsendable due to very poor picture quality. All 31 seasons were gradually uploaded to the official Bob Ross YouTube channel until January 2017, but are blocked in Germany. On the occasion of Bob Ross's 73rd birthday, the live streaming video portal Twitch.tv broadcast all episodes of the format one after the other in nine days from October 29, 2015. There, the show reached over 180,000 viewers simultaneously and over 3.5 million during the broadcast.

The show and its moderator have now achieved a certain cult status - especially among students, around 25,000 of whom have come together in various online fan groups on social networks .

Home video publishing

The show is distributed on DVD by Bob Ross Inc. The programs are not sorted according to seasons, but according to the motifs to be painted, for example "Waterfalls Collection" or "Seascape Collection".

Two DVD collections, each with two DVDs, are currently available in German. Collection 1 comprises the 10th season and collection 2 a compilation of different seasons.
