The Matrix Online ( MxO for short ) was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from the Matrix film universe, which was operated from 2005 to 2009. The game was developed by Monolith Productions and thus belonged to the Warner Bros. -Group that acquired Monolith in 2004.
Creation and concept
The Matrix Online was published in the first quarter of 2005 . Even during the beta tests there was an extreme rush for the game, which was considered the last contribution to the great Matrix universe after the film trilogy was over. Within the game, as with all MMORPGs, it was possible for the player to create his own, individual character and use it to intervene in the world of Megacity , the world of MxO. So, along with thousands of other online players, the player continued the story of the Matrix (the plot begins where Matrix Revolutions ends).
It was possible within the game to meet characters from the films, such as Morpheus or the Oracle, and by perfecting your own character, you could play a key role in the war for control of the matrix (between people, machines, and programs) to fight for.
There were also major events within the Matrix. It took the form of extra-historical events such as parties (dancing is also possible ...), fight clubs, races or other competitions as well as meetings and major internal historical events that took place regularly.
The maximum level was level 50. There were no defined classes in the game, but a skill tree that was filled with learning points. All archetypes could be combined. The skills could be changed continuously in the game.
Due to insufficient sales and subscriber numbers, the game was stopped in August 2009.
server
During the transfer of the game from Monolith Productions to Sony Online Entertainment in August 2005, the original 9 servers were reduced to 3 until the shutdown.
- Syntax; is a non-hostile server. It consists of the players from the former Linenoise, Proxy and Output Server.
- Recursion; is a non-hostile server. It consists of the players of the former Method, Regression and Iterator Server.
- Vector; is the only Hostile server. Unlike the other servers, on which PvP can optionally be activated, the players on this server are permanently flagged for PvP (player vs. player); starting with level 16. Vector consists of the players of the former Enumerator, Heuristic and Input Server
