The Old House (New Abbey)

The Old House is a residential building in the Scottish village of New Abbey in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1971 the structure was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The building is on a side street off Main Street ( A710 ) in the small town of New Abbey. It has a footprint of around 9.4 m × 5.5 m. The masonry consists of roughly hewn granite blocks. The red window frames are set apart from this, but they are more recent. The two-story building is accessible via a staircase running parallel to the outer wall, which leads to the entrance door on the upper floor on the east side. The small windows are arranged irregularly. Two modern skylights are set into the final, slate-covered gable roof with gable-end chimneys .

The year of construction of Old House has not been clearly established. On the east side is the weathered inscription, which was read as "WS 1622 JB" during an early inspection, while in 1967 it was given as "IS 16.2 RB". The initials could refer to John Stewart of Shambellie and his wife R. Brown.
