New Abbey , also obsolete Newabbey , Scottish Gaelic An Abaid Ur , is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is about ten kilometers south of Dumfries and 21 kilometers west of Annan . The brook New Abbey Pow , which flows about two kilometers east near its confluence with the Solway Firth in the Nith , limits the village to the north. Historically, New Abbey was in the traditional county of Kirkcudbrightshire .

history

In 1273 founded the Cistercian monks at the site with the Sweetheart Abbey , a branch monastery of the Abbey Dundrennan . The location on the leeward side of the 569 m high Criffel may have been an important aspect when choosing the location. Devorgilla of Galloway , mother of the future Scottish King John Balliol , initiated the establishment of the monastery.

A tower house from the 16th century formed the nucleus of the mansion to the east, Kirkconnel House . The expansion goes back to James Maxwell after his return to Scotland around 1750. Located on a side street off Main Street , the Old House was built in the 17th century and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in New Abbey. On the northwest edge of New Abbey is Shambellie House . It was based on a design by Scottish architect David Bryce . The National Museum of Costume has been housed there since 1982 .

A mill may have operated on the New Abbey Mill site since 1559. A stream flowing from Loch Kindar to the south of the village fed the water wheel of the water mill . In the later 20th century, Historic Scotland restored the operation and opened a mill museum there. The building is not only listed as a Category A building, it is also classified as a Scheduled Monument .

In the context of the census survey in 1971, 339 inhabitants were counted in the small town of New Abbey.

traffic

The A710 starting in Dumfries is the main road from New Abbey. It connects the villages along the Nith estuary and the north coast of the Solway Firth to Dalbeattie to the trunk road network. In Dumfries, ten kilometers away, there is a connection to various A-roads, including the A75 ( Stranraer - Gretna Green ). With the Killywhan station, a station was built around nine kilometers to the northwest in the course of the 19th century. The station has since been abandoned.
