The Dundrennan Monastery ( En : Dundrennan Abbey ; Gäl. Abaid Dhùn Droighnein ) is a former Cistercian abbey in Scotland . It is located in Dundrennan near Kirkcudbright in the Diocese of Galloway .
history
The monastery was founded in 1142 by the Scottish King David I and Fergus von Galloway . Dundrennan Abbey was a subsidiary of Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire ( England ), which in turn was a subsidiary of Clairvaux Primary Abbey . The daughter monasteries of Glenluce Monastery and Sweetheart Monastery were founded from Dundrennan Abbey . After the Scottish Reformation, the monastery passed to the Crown in 1587; it came in 1606 to John Murray, later the Earl of Annandale. The facility then fell into disrepair and was used as a quarry. It is now maintained by Historic Scotland .
Buildings and plant
The entrance ( Early English ) is preserved from the nave . The walls of the transept are still there. The pointed arches of the north transept are surmounted by blind arcades, and in the south transept by a triforium made of pointed arches, over which there are arched windows. The entrance to the chapter house has also been preserved.
