Dalbeattie ( Gaelic : Dail Bheithe ) is a town in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland . The city of 4,227 inhabitants became famous for its granite mining.
Industry and tourism
Dalbeattie is the source of the material for the construction of many well-known structures such as the fortification of the Thames, the Mersey Docks in Liverpool and the Eddystone lighthouse . Granite was also used in the city itself. In addition to the granite industry, there were several factories in Dalbeattie that made coils, gloves, cheese, cars, steel and much more.
Today the industry is in decline and the city is focused on tourism.
Sons and daughters
Dalbeattie is the hometown of William M. Murdoch , the first officer of the RMS Titanic , who was killed in the shipwreck. A memorial stone was erected in the city in his honor.
