Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium

The Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium ( Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium ), abbreviated ODB , is a first time published in 1991 three-volume English-language reference book on the history and culture of the Byzantine Empire , which by the publisher Oxford University Press is laid. It is considered the standard lexicon of Byzantine studies , although the research status of individual contributions is no longer up-to-date.

The editor was the Russian-American Byzantinist Alexander Kazhdan , who wrote many entries himself. The work contains more than 5,000 lemmas on the history, theology, literature, art, warfare and demographics of the Byzantine Empire. In 1991, it won the Association of American Publishers ' R. R. Hawkins Prize for Outstanding Scientific Work .
