action

The action takes place during the vacation trip of Alexander Lightwood and Magnus Bane (Malec). In the series Chronicles of the Shadowhunters, between the event where Valentine conjured an angel, Alexander kissed Magnus in front of all the shadowhunters and when Magnus Bane and Alexander are called out of vacation because the vampire lady Camille Belcourt only wants to talk to Magnus.

Alexander Lightwood is a shadow hunter, a Nephilim who secretly kills demons. Magnus Bane is a sorcerer, a being with magical powers, who arises from the connection between a person and a demon, in this case Asmodeus'. Together they are the lovers "Malec", even if homosexuality is outlawed in the shadow hunter community. The shadow worlders, i.e. fairies, vampires, werewolves and sorcerers, on the other hand, have nothing against same-sex love. However, shadow worlders and shadow hunters do not like each other, which often leads to challenges in the life of the lovers.

The relationship is only a few weeks old, even though they've fought many fights and saved each other's lives in the meantime. The vacation trip should be a romantic undertaking designed by Magnus Bane to get to know each other better. However, things go wrong when an ominous cult suddenly emerges that is said to have been founded by Magnus Bane.

Paris

In the first part you are at the beginning of your journey and visit the city of Paris. Magnus Bane has planned a romantic vacation season. However, his past catches up with him. Tessa Gray, one of his best friends and sorceress, tells of a cult called "Crimson Hand" which is said to have been founded by Magnus Bane centuries ago. The secret organization of the warlocks wants to hand Magnus Bane over to the shadowhunters, but Tessa was able to convince them that Magnus Bane should solve the matter himself.

Magnus Bane cannot remember ever having founded such a cult. However, he knows that his memories have been manipulated. However, Alexander Lightwood believes in his boyfriend and refuses to hand Magnus Bane over to the Shadowhunter Council, even though it is his duty. Together they travel to Venice on the Orient Express, because Venice is said to be one of the Crimson Hand headquarters. During the journey with the Orient Express they are attacked by demons, but thanks to the help of the hitherto unknown sorceress S. they can destroy them.

Venice

When they arrive in Venice, Alexander, Magnus and S. make their way to the Palazzo that was the former headquarters of the Crimson Hand. Malcolm Fade, a friend of Magnus Bane, is holding a soiree and during this the three of them examine the building for traces. A fight ensues between Malcolm and another warlock as Malcolm stole the palazzo. The building is destroyed and in the middle of the ruins is the corpse of a sorcerer who left the cult and wanted to cooperate with the shadowhunters to stop them.

The three main characters find a place of worship and the secret book of the organization in the cellar. The book states that the order is active in Rome.

Rome

The heroes drive to Rome in an Italian car. There the paths of the three separate. Alexander tries to get information from the Shadowhunter Institute. There he meets Helen and Aline. When Alexander von S. receives a message with a location, the three shadow hunters move out there. However, it is a trap. Together they survive this and Alexander contacts Magnus Bane's vampire friend Raphtael. This confirms that the slain sorcerer was not killed by a vampire, as was initially believed, but through punctures in the throat. Alexander suddenly realizes that S. is the secret cult leader. Together with Helen and Alice, he makes his way to Magnus with the help of a search rune, who is to be sacrificed to the demon Asmodeus. Asmodeus appears at the sacrifice process, but can be driven away by the love of Alexander and Magnus.

After the exhausting vacation trip, the couple moves back to New York, where they secretly continue their vacation.

Cliff Hanger

S. was released by Alexander, otherwise she would be killed by the council. She pulls it back to her secret hiding place, where she holds the believed to be dead Ragnor Fell. Her goal, she says, is to destroy the "Eldest Curses". Eldest Curses are the physical descendants of the demon Asmodeus.

Reactions

Cassandra Clare first wrote about the love of Alexander Lightwood and Magnus Bane in her Shadowhunter Chronicle. Your friends from the LGBTQI + community could not find any books where same-sex love was portrayed as normal and everyday. Although Malec had not even kissed in the book, Clare's books were rejected by various publishers and judged as too sexual in various media. With her spin-off "The Eldest Curses" trilogy, she writes in depth about the love between Magnus Bane and Alexander Lightwood.
