history
The theater square was laid out in the course of the establishment of the State Theater in the 1870s. In 1927, the Eisenach honorary citizen Curt Elschner donated the Eulenspiegel fountain , which was installed in the middle of the square. The fountain with a stone Till Eulenspiegel sculpture was dismantled in 1970 and replaced by a metal fountain sculpture created by Günther Laufer . In the same year, the square was the occasion of the 100th birthday of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin in Lenin Square renamed and carried that name until the 1,991th
In 1992 the Theaterplatz and its buildings were placed under monument protection as an ensemble . The metal sculpture of the fountain had to be dismantled in 2010 due to corrosion damage , as the stability was impaired. In addition, the well basins were leaking, they were filled with earth after the well was shut down and designed as a flower bed.
From 2011 to 2012 the square was redesigned as part of a citizens' project by citizens and local companies on a voluntary basis. The square was cleared and provided with new paths, green areas and benches. In June 2015, a bronze sculpture of Ernst Abbe , who was born in Eisenach, was consecrated on the square .
