Theater Missile Defense

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Theater - Missile - Defense project (British English: Defense) is to create a defense system against ballistic nuclear weapons (see ICBM ). It is also integrated as the last stage in the NMD program. The aim of this project is to destroy ballistic nuclear weapons upon reentry on final approach. According to the current state of development (Dec. 2007) this is achieved with a Standard Missile 3. The main problem with this solution is the high speed of the nuclear warhead, which is well above the speed of sound. A test in spring 2007 was successful.
