Theodoros of Edessa

Theodoros of Edessa , also called Theodoros the Sabait , was born in Edessa . When he was about nineteen he became a monk in Mar Saba Monastery , southwest of Jerusalem . Around the year 836 he became bishop of his native city, where he endeavored to enforce Orthodox doctrine against the threat of Arianism , Nestorianism and other deviant doctrines. The Orthodox Church venerates him as a saint . His feast day is July 19th.

Impact history

In the Philocalie two writings are listed under his name: A hundred chapters for the great benefit of the soul and contemplation of our holy father Theodorus . It is remarkable that his thinking is very much based on Evagrios Pontikos . In some cases he even takes over some parts of the pontier literally.
