As a thermionic discharge is referred to those gas discharges , in which electrons by thermal emission generated a heated surface.

Such a surface can be, for example, a tungsten wire that is heated by an electric current . The emerging electrons can now excite any gas atoms , which can release the absorbed energy in the form of light .
