The Theseus painter was a late exponent of Attic vase painting of the black-figure style . His works are dated between 505 BC. BC and 485 BC Dated.

In a time when more and more vase painters favored the red-figure style and the quality of the painters of black-figure vases was rather poor, the Theseus painter stands out as one of the last important representatives of the black-figure style. About 200 vases have been preserved to this day, which are attributed to him, including in his early phase mainly skyphoi of the heron class . The painter, who is not known by name, was named with an emergency name due to his frequent depictions of Theseus . The Theseus painter apparently changed workshops several times. In his later phase he mainly devoted himself to painting lekyths .

His range of topics is diverse, his drawing style is clear and his incised lines are smooth. For him, his mythological plot pictures are less characteristic than the calmly arranged or comfortably positioned gods and heroes. He is no less known for his scenes from everyday life, which are credited with a great deal of ingenuity. The front and back of the vases are often related to each other or even show the same motif.
