from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thibron († 391 BC ) was a Spartan general in the Spartan-Persian War and the Corinthian War .

He was born in 399 BC. BC sent as commander to Asia Minor , where he was supposed to defend the Ionian cities against the attack of the Persian Empire . His force became powerful by taking in the remains of Xenophon's mercenaries, Cyrus, and gave the Persians some successful skirmishes. Nevertheless, Thibron was eventually replaced because of insufficient success and replaced by the Spartian Derkyllidas . In Sparta he was charged and convicted because his troops had looted in friendly territory.

In 391 BC BC he was sent again with an army to Asia Minor to take action against the Persian satrap Struthas , who pursued a pro- Athenian policy. Thibron made several incursions into Persian territory; but they were not very well prepared, so that Struthas succeeded in defeating the Spartans in an ambush and rubbing them up. Thibron was also killed.
