Thurayya

Thurayya (Arabic for “ Pleiades ”) is a constellation handed down from the pre-Islamic period . It was considered a messenger of the rain. The constellation is composed of stars from the now known constellations Cassiopeia , Perseus and Whale .

  • (33 / α Per) Mirfak : المرفق الثريا ("al-mirfaq al-thurayya"): "Elbow of the Pleiades"
  • (41 / ν Per) Adid Borealis: الدد ("al-adid"): "the upper arm" + Borealis ("north") ("al-adid" comes from الدد الثريا; "al-adid al-thurayya", what "upper arm of the Pleiades" means)
  • (45 / ε Per) Adid Australis: الدد ("al-adid"): "the upper arm" + Australis ("south")
