Tibetan yak

The Tibetan yak is a breed of domestic yak . Since the targeted breeding of the yak is not yet very advanced, yak breeds generally have less breed-typical characteristics than was the case, for example, with European land cattle breeds in the middle of the 19th century. Therefore, phenotypic differences in the house yak are mainly due to the geographical separation of widely spaced locations. The Tibetan yak is mainly kept in southeastern Tibet. The region is a traditional yak holding area.

Compared to other yak races such as the white Tianzhu yak or the Gannan yak , it is not a particularly high performance breed . The yaks are kept in high mountain meadows and mountain pastures, which often suffer from overgrazing . Tibetan yaks are therefore relatively light and have no special performance characteristics. The body color is predominantly black. Eight percent of all Tibetan yaks are polled.
