Zoo (Aurich)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The zoo is a forest in the East Frisian district town of Aurich in Lower Saxony . It is also known under the name Eschener wood .

history

The zoo emerged from a historical hunting ground . The East Frisian Count Ulrich II (1628–48) had this laid out. Remains of the surrounding wall are still preserved from the former complex, which was once supposed to prevent the roe deer kept in the zoo from breaking out. According to the historian Tileman Dothias Wiarda , the decline of the zoo began after East Friesland fell to Prussia in 1744 after the death of the last local prince, Carl Edzard . On the initiative of Count Friedrich Karl Heinrich von Schwerin , President of the Prussian War and Domain Chamber in Aurich, the park was redesigned into a pleasant promenade in 1803 . Schwerin financed the redesign of the former princely zoo into a park from the income from the “massive destruction of files at the War and Domain Chamber” during his presidency.

Todays use

Today the old trees in particular are still preserved. Overall, however, the area is considered overgrown. The waterways have dried up and the old network of paths with the visual axes can no longer be walked, so that the original system is no longer recognizable.
