Tiger is a collection of various shell scripts and C programs with which Unix systems can be checked for special security problems. The tools can be used as an audit tool or as an intrusion detection system .

history

Tiger was originally developed at Texas A&M University (TAMU). There the software was used to check Unix computers that were to be accessed from outside for security. Each of these systems had to pass the exam.

  • In 1994 TAMU stopped further development
  • Tiger was further developed in 3 different versions
    • Bryan Gartner ( Hewlett-Packard )
    • under the name TARA from the Advanced Research Corporation
    • from the Debian project
  • In June 2002 these three variants were brought together again at the initiative of Bryan Gartner and under the direction of Debian developer Javier Fernandez-Sanguino.
  • Since then, Tiger has been published under the GNU GPL
