Tobias Kippenberg
Tobias J. Kippenberg (born November 8, 1976 in Berlin ) is a German physicist who deals with quantum optics .
Life
Kippenberg studied physics and electrical engineering at RWTH Aachen University as a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation with an intermediate diploma in 1998 in both subjects and applied physics at Caltech with a master’s degree in 2000 and a doctorate with Kerry Vahala in 2004. He was a post-doctoral student at the Center for the Physics of Information des Caltech and from 2005 at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in the department of Theodor Hänsch , where he set up the junior research group “Laboratory of Photonics” ( funded as part of a Marie Curie Excellence Grant from 2007 ). In 2009 he completed his habilitation at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . From 2008 he was assistant professor at the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), where he received a full professorship in 2013.
He is a pioneer in the development of micro-cavity optical resonators for quantum optomechanics and for frequency combs .
