Tokugawa Jikki

The Tokugawa Jikki ( Japanese 徳 川 實 記 , Eng. "True History of the House of Tokugawa") is a semi-official history of the first ten Tokugawa shoguns of the Edo period , from Tokugawa Ieyasu to Ieharu , in the style of the imperial tales represents.

Origin and content

From 1809 to 1849 about twenty historians, under the direction of Hayashi Jussai , were involved in its compilation .

The work is divided into 516 chapters. The sources are available in a chronological text. Overall, the presentation is objective and reliable.

The Zoku Tokugawa Jikki ( 續 徳 川 實 紀 ) was planned as a continuation of the basic work . This should report on the 50-year tenure of Tokugawa Ienari . The Meiji Restoration prevented completion.
