history
The university was founded in 1900 as the Ōkura commercial school ( 大 倉 商業 学校 , Ōkura shōgyō gakkō ). The founder was Ōkura Kihachirō (1837-1927), a Japanese entrepreneur. The purpose of the foundation was to educate the merchants who could compete with foreigners. The school was in Akasaka-Aoichō ( 赤 坂 葵 町 , today Toranomon 2-chōme, Minato-ku , Tokyo. 35 ° 40 ′ 2.8 ″ N , 139 ° 44 ′ 42.9 ″ E ).
In 1919 it developed into the Ōkura Higher Commercial School ( 大 倉 高等 商業 学校 , Ōkura kōtō shōgyō gakkō ). In 1944 it was renamed Ōkura Business School ( 大 倉 経 済 専 門 学校 , Ōkura keizai semmon gakkō ). In May 1945 the school buildings were destroyed by the war. In 1946 the school moved to what is now the Kokubunji campus.
In 1949 the business school developed into the Tokyo University of Economics and Business. At first it only had one faculty (economics). She then founded more faculties: Business Administration (1964), Communication Studies (1995) and Modern Law (2000).
