Tombili

Tombili (place and date of birth unknown, died August 1, 2016 in Istanbul ) was a street hangover . The animal became internationally known through a photo that shows it in a pose that is reminiscent of a person sitting relaxed. After his death, the city of Istanbul paid tribute to Tombili with a statue that shows the cat in his striking pose.
Life
Tombili (Turkish for chubby ) was a street cat who lived in Ziverbey in the Kadıköy district on the Asian side of Istanbul. Because of his way of leaning against edges and stairs, the cat gained popularity among residents in his neighborhood. A photo of this pose made the hangover known on social networks worldwide and developed into an internet phenomenon . This gave him cult status in the Kadıköy district. Tombili fell seriously ill in 2016 and finally passed away in early August.

After his death, the Istanbul authorities erected a bronze statue in Kadıköy at the request of the local residents, which was inaugurated on World Animal Day on October 4, 2016. The campaign was initiated by the “Anadolu Kedisi” interest group. The association, which is committed to protecting cats from a scientific point of view, collected 17,000 signatures for this project in a petition . The statue was created on a voluntary basis by the resident sculptor Seval Sahin. Başar Necipoğlu, the deputy mayor of Kadıköy, gave a speech at the inauguration of the monument.
