Tongbeiquan

Tongbeiquan ( Chinese  通 臂 拳 ) is one of the so-called internal martial arts in China.

Here, as with the other internal martial arts, the origin cannot be precisely determined. Tong means free, open, continuous, also: connecting something, mastering something. At means back or shoulder. The common translation is: opening or connecting the back or the shoulders, or the force that opens up from the back.

In addition to a legend about the origin of Tongbeiquan, which goes back to the early days of Chinese culture, the Daoist Chen Tuan (also Chen Xiyi or Fu Yaozi), who lived on Hua Shan in the 10th century, is named as the founder. But even if the roots are said to be 1000 years old, Tongbeiquan did not become publicly known until the beginning of the 19th century through Lu Yunqing and his student Qi Xian. Tong Bei Quan is one of the oldest internal martial arts. Historical sources document the spread of this fighting technique as early as 1372 in the Chinese province of Shanxi. The founder of the Taijiquan Chen style, Chen Pu , is also believed to have learned Tongbeiquan and in fact both styles have some similarities.

Tong Bei is learned in three steps:

1. Striking Techniques - Dan Chao There are 24 different "simple strikes" (Dan Chao), with which the release of the energy (Fa Jing) and the inner energy (Nei Jing) are practiced.

2. Step exercises - Xing Bu In addition to the blows, step sequences are also practiced. The first phase consists of a few slow movements, in which the emphasis is placed on the correct stance and the flow of energy. In the second phase, several steps are combined, finally all movements are combined into an uninterrupted form of attacks and blows.

3. The Tong Bei Forms First, a series of stalls is practiced in order to harmonize the Qi flow and to use the earth's force for rooting (hips and legs), intention (Yi) and energy are aligned with the movements. Finally, the uses of each stance are practiced in combat. The objective in all training phases is that the movements are consistently relaxed and natural. Tongbeiquan is similar to Xingyiquan in terms of its straight lines.
