description

The Tontine Hotel is located northwest of downtown Greenock on Union Street . The building was designed as a hotel and dates from 1801. The construction costs were around £ 10,000. Operations could have started the following year because a newspaper advertisement was looking for a tenant. The building has three floors. In addition, the basement and the attic are fully developed. The south-west facing building front is symmetrical. In the middle is the entrance area with a column-supported canopy. Around 1900 this area was glazed on all sides. The windows are evenly arranged on three vertical axes across all floors. A triangular gable crowns the facade in the middle. One-story wings, which were added in 1803, extend on both sides.
