The subway has only been running here since the early 1940s, but the station was built more than seventy years earlier as a stop for a suburban railway. The western part of the station building is rented as business premises. To the east of the station there is a dead end street with a turning area for buses and a parking lot. The station is not wheelchair accessible because of the stairs leading down to the platforms. The architecture of the station building from Victorian times has largely been preserved.

history

The plans for the station go back to the Edgware, Highgate and London Railway (EH&LR), which was taken over by the Great Northern Railway (GNR) in 1867 . The GNR opened the railway line between Finchley Central and High Barnet on April 1, 1872 , the station was initially called Whetstone and Totteridge .

With the Railways Act 1921 , all railway companies in the country were combined into four large companies, with the GNR merging with the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923 . As part of the Northern Heights project, the railway line to High Barnet was integrated into the underground network. The metro began operating on April 14, 1940, and the name that is common today has been used ever since. Both the underground and the railroad ran on the route for a short time; the last LNER train ran in March 1941.
