Tour LU

Tour LU is the general name for the iconic tower of the former Lefèvre-Utile biscuit factory near the center of Nantes .

history

Louis Lefèvre-Utile bought a plot of land near the castle on the banks of the Saint-Félix Canal in 1885 . The biscuit factory LU, which he founded and expanded again and again, stood here until 1974. In 1888, after a major fire, and in 1899, major, architecturally demanding renovations were carried out. At the beginning of the 20th century, the architect Auguste Bluysen created the two iconic towers to the left and right of Avenue Carnot.

This ensemble was destroyed in 1974, but a tower was reconstructed in the 1990s (until 1998). The counterpart of the tower built in 1905 in the Art Nouveau style fell victim to a new hotel. The abbreviation LU today stands for lieu unique ("unique place"); the remaining part of the formerly extensive biscuit factory is used culturally.
