" Pratt & Whitney R-985 " star engine with Townend ring

A townend ring is an engine cowling for a radial engine . An aerodynamically shaped ring is attached above the cylinder heads of the engine. This ensures a defined air flow through the motor and the reduction of turbulence without impairing the cooling.

It is named after its developer Hubert Townend .

The idea of the Townendring was completed with the NACA hood . Townendrings are no longer used today. They were only used in the 1920s and 1930s .
