Tracheal gill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tracheal gills are the typical respiratory organs of aquatic insect larvae. As attachments on the abdomen (for example with small dragonflies , (Zygoptera)), on the thorax, or also embedded in the abdomen (for example with large dragonflies , (Anisoptera)), they serve to increase the surface area of the closed tracheal system. The tracheal gills are formed by remodeling from the cerci and the terminal filum .
