A carrier bag (in Austria : Sackerl ) is used for the combined transport of smaller goods. Straps or openings through which a hand can pass are often provided for carrying.

The most common are carrier bags made of welded plastic films , the plastic bags . These are mostly provided with marketing imprints in the form of advertising . In addition, carrier bags made of textile fabric or paper are also used , occasionally also mesh carrier bags . Bags reinforced with fibers are common for the transport of heavy goods .

Tote bags are mostly printed for advertising purposes. For this purpose, the offset or flexographic printing process is mainly used for paper carrier bags . Plastic carrier bags are printed using flexographic printing and cotton carrier bags are printed using screen printing.
