Mourning crest

A mourning coat of arms (also mourning plaque ) is a coat of arms that was created and issued especially for mourning purposes .

It is a large black board on which the coat of arms of the deceased is shown. This plaque was displayed for a certain time during the funeral ceremony. So it is called z. B. in a travelogue from London at the beginning of the 19th century:

“When a noble owner of these aristocratic apartments dies, a large, rectangular tableau is set up on the front of the house, in which the coats of arms of the deceased shine on a black background. This mourning coat of arms will remain here for a whole year. "
