Tropfhaus or Trüpfhaus is a term from Franconian . These are small houses where the property did not reach further than the drops of water falling from the roof, hence a drip house.

The term drip house is in the context of other forms of agricultural property:

Courtyard : a greater good
Half yard or good: a medium good
Selde or Gütlein: a small agricultural property
House, drip house: a property without real estate

These small drip houses, which usually had no more than 30 m² of living space, were mostly the apartments of day laborers , small craftsmen and home workers who lived in them with their often large families. The plots were too small to be self-sufficient in agriculture.

The drip houses that are still preserved today are mostly heavily shaped, so that the original dimensions can no longer be recognized. A large number of drip houses can be seen in Sassanfahrt near Hirschaid . It used to be around 80 pieces. Today you can still see drip houses in many houses in the village, some have been skillfully modernized, others still preserved in their originality. This is particularly beautiful to see at Neugartenstrasse 1. The best way to experience the living conditions is in the local museum.

Drip houses were built by the communities, in Sassanfahrt by the manorial landlord, Reich Count Julius von Soden , or by richer farmers. There was a larger room in the house that was used for working, cooking and sleeping. The front door was on the side. There was still room for a goat or a pig behind the entrance to the house. From the house square the floor stairs led directly to the attic. There was food and feed there, with more sleeping places in between.
