Tuonela (also Tuoni , Manala or Mana ) is the realm of the dead or the underworld in Finnish mythology . In Tuonela, Tuoni and Tuonetar rule with the support of Kalma . The Tuonela River is guarded by Surma .

Tuonela is known from the Finnish national epic Kalevala . In the 16th Song of Kalevala, Väinämöinen travels alive to Tuonela to find spells.

Tuonela is used as a translation for the Greek word Ἅιδης ( Hades ) in the Finnish translation of the Bible. In Christianity, Tuonela is often interpreted as a resting place before the last judgment .
