Turkey Blocks (also TurkeyBlocks.org ) is an independent monitoring project that deals with press and internet censorship in Turkey . The organization describes itself as independent and non-partisan and aims to improve freedom of expression and reporting in and from Turkey.

history

The organization was founded in 2015 and is mostly run by volunteers.

In the years 2015 and July 2016, the organization identified eight separate incidents of mass censorship of online media, most of which occurred immediately after terrorist attacks, under the guise of news blackouts. For example, Twitter and Facebook were blocked for hours or days.

On April 29, 2017, the organization reported on the blockade of all language versions of Wikipedia from Turkey, with the aim of changing content relating to Turkey.

Turkey Blocks' work is recognized internationally. Turkey Blocks received the Index on Censorship's Digital Award for Freedom of Expression on April 19, 2017 .
