1761 John Schlatter started his grocery store in the house "behind the Tower", located at the Kugelgasse between tower and Zeughausgasse, in the shadow of St. Laurenzen tower. He sold sugar, spices, tobacco, legumes and dried fruits and coffee. The company remained in the hands of the Schlatter family until Leo Reiser, a former apprentice of Theodor Schlatter, took over the company in 1885. In 1945 the company went to Willi Leuthold, grandfather of today's main shareholder Stefan Leuthold. Under Willi Leuthold, the growing business moved to Helvetiastrasse in St. Fiden in 1977 , before moving to today's location at Martinsbruggerstrasse 90 in the east of St. Gallen under his son Juan Leuthold.

In 1977 the coffee roasting company was also taken over by Albrecht Pletscher with the local Bogen Kaffee brand , which had existed since 1849. At the place where the company was founded, in Vorstadt 10 in Schaffhausen, Turm Kaffee still runs a coffee and tea specialty shop today.

In 2019 the Barista Academy was opened in St. Gallen, with courses all about coffee. Today the company has over 30 employees.

Sales and Products

Turm Kaffee was initially only sold to business customers in the catering and hotel sector, and since 1998 also to Germany . In 2018, Turm Kaffee also launched a range for private customers that can be purchased online. Turm Kaffee is now sold in all three DA-CH countries.

Turm Kaffee sources its coffee varieties from a wide variety of growing countries, e. B. Brazil, Colombia, Honduras, Kenya, Indonesia.

In 2018, Turm Kaffee expanded the proportion of sustainable coffee in its range and, in addition to Fairtrade and organic coffees, also offers coffee from the Orang Utan Coffee Project , which supports coffee farmers who manage their coffee plantations ecologically and protects orangutans . Turm Kaffee also announced that it intends to expand the proportion of sustainable coffee in its range from 20 to 40 percent over the next five years.
