history

Turtle Island is a band from the Japanese car city Toyota, which plays a mix of Japanese tribal punk and traditional Ohayashi Matsuri (= Japanese Carnival Festival) music mixed with ska, rock, reggae and world music elements. On the stage, Turtle Islands musicians play a hodgepodge of instruments: This ranges from the basic set of drums, guitar, bass and saxophone to traditional Japanese / Asian instruments such as taiko (= Japanese drum), bamboo flute, batokin or sitar.

By 2006 Turtle Island grew to its current maximum formation of up to 14 musicians. Including Taro the Tornado, the drummer of the Japanese fast-core band “ Nice View ”. The band's music is very danceable, just as it has been for a long time at the traditional Japanese and Korean bon festivals (festivals for the salvation of spirits) - a reference that Turtle Island deliberately chose and sought: because that is where the roots lie their music.

In the song lyrics, Turtle Island ask about the meaning and nonsense of our existence. In their songs, the band deals with current problems and issues that concern us all, such as human freedom, deceptions and disappointments.

Turtle Island has released three albums so far: Shinkai no mizu no youni (Like the water of the ocean, 2002), the live album Madara de Odore (Dance on the Spot, 2004), Self Navigation CD & DVD (2007).
