Type-Length-Value

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The type-length-value format ( TLV ; German type-length-value ; also tag-length-value ) is used in network protocols and file formats in order to transmit a variable number of attributes in a message or file.

An attribute is transmitted using the following triple (Type, Length, Value):

  1. Type ( type ): determines the type of the attribute
  2. Length : determines the transmission length of the attribute
  3. Value ( value ): contains the actual value of the attribute
