Gernstall is a district of the Swabian district town of Mindelheim in the Unterallgäu district ( Bavaria ).
geography
location
Gernstall is located about one kilometer south of the city center of Mindelheim and one kilometer north of Apfeltrach on the A96 . The Mindel flows through the hallways of the village .
structure
The districts of Unggenried , Vogelhäuser and Sankt Georgenberg belonged to the community of Gernstall .
history
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1295. In the document, the Mindelbergers , at that time the rulers, the Wernershof , located between the estates of Ulrich von Berwang (Börwang near Kempten) and the Meiers (Meierhof) in Geroldestal , attend the Mindelheimer Augustinian ceremonies who had previously given a farm in Zaisertshofen to the Steingaden monastery at the request of the rulers .
The place name mentioned, describing the valley settlement of a Gerold, Gernolt or Gernhold, over the centuries became Gerunstal (1390, 1419) and Gerenstal (1467 to 18th century), from which the deformity Gernstall emerged.
The Mindelheim Augustinians expanded their property in Gernstall. On December 6, 1390 they received the mill from Jos zu Hürnbach zu Altensteig , which they probably gave up again later because they acquired the interest rights to it in 1515. According to the Mindelheimer Kastenamtsurbar , the mill was owned by the rulers in 1616. The Rottenbuch monastery was also wealthy in Gernstall, in 1724 it owned a farm there.
The Chapel to the Seven Sorrows of Mary , a branch church of the parish of St. Stephan, Mindelheim, was first mentioned in 1749 and described as restored. It must therefore have existed for a long time.
Gernstall was a hamlet until 1821 , then a village and a municipality. This was incorporated into the city of Mindelheim on October 1, 1971 , but had been a branch of the St. Stephan parish in Mindelheim for a long time.
Population development
The population in Gernstall has fluctuated little since the 19th century. Despite its proximity to the city of Mindelheim, it has never grown significantly beyond its medieval size. As in the above-mentioned document from 1467, it is still referred to in 1821 as a hamlet with 12 houses, 20 families and 81 souls.
