founding

Main entrance to the university

The university was founded in 1994 as the Tzu Chi Medical School by Cheng Yen , the founder of the Tzu Chi Foundation. In 2000, the institution was renamed "Tzu Chi University".

Master Cheng Yen dedicates her life to the needy because she understands illness as the root of torment and the mother of poverty. Therefore she founded the construction of a hospital, which is now part of the medical faculty.

The university was built in eastern Taiwan to increase medical care and educational opportunities in the region. The university also wants to encourage students to get involved and help others.
