UAV-2 Gavilán (German: Sparrowhawk) is the first unmanned aerial vehicle developed in Ecuador by the Center for Research and Development (Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo, or CIDFAE for short) .

The first flight took place in 2013, a total of three units of the UAV series have been built by CIDFAE. In 2014 four more UAV-2 Gavilán are to be delivered for national use. According to the Departamento de Ingeniería Aeronáutica, the main focus of operations will be border protection and drug transport surveillance. Ecuador is also planning to export the UAV-2 to other Latin American countries.

Machines built so far:

  • UAV-0: trial and demonstration model
  • UAV-1: Take-off and landing procedure with autonomous real-time transmission of the recorded data for testing electro-optical systems
  • UAV-2: corresponds to the planned series version with improved range and satellite tracking
