UMDNS

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Universal Medical Device Nomenclature System ( UMDNS ) is a coded classification system for medical devices and was developed by the ECRI Institute (Emergency Care Research Institute) in the United States. It is planned to replace the UMDNS together with the Global Diagnostic Market Statistics (GDMS) - previous name: European Diagnostics Market Statistics (EDMS) of the European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association (EDMA) - by the Global Medical Devices Nomenclature (GMDN), for which it There is no official German translation yet.

Situation in Germany

The German-language versions 1.0 (as of 1996) and 1.1 (as of 1998) of the UMDNS were translated into German by emtec eV and edited and published by the German Institute for Medical Documentation and Information (DIMDI) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health.

Version 1.0 contains the translated German main terms, with around 5,000 terms listed in alphabetical order and each main term assigned a code (Universal Medical Device Code - UMDC). Version 1.1 also contains about 13,000 German synonyms, similar terms, related terms, specific terms to make it easier to find a main term. Here, there are randomly made digit codes (for example 'defibrillator' '11-132') without a hierarchy. The catalog does not contain any further information (for example: types, model series, manufacturers). Comprehensive evaluations (for example 'all imaging systems') are also difficult or impossible to accomplish. DIMDI offers a free download of the German UMDNS.

According to Section 8 of the Medical Devices Operator Ordinance , the current nomenclature issued by DIMDI should be used; this would currently (2006) be UMDNS. In contrast to this , when incidents are reported in accordance with Section 2 of the Medical Devices Safety Plan Ordinance (MPSV) and the form issued by DIMDI, the UMDNS classification must be made.
