UNAFHIR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

UNAFHIR stands for "United Nations Austrian Field Hospital in Iran" and is the name of a humanitarian operation by the Austrian Armed Forces (ÖBH) at the request of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees . A field hospital was used to help the Kurds.

In 1991, after the Second Gulf War, there was a mass exodus of Kurds to neighboring countries, primarily to Iran and Turkey . This resulted in a myriad of refugee camps in the border region of these countries; this sudden and strong influx of people could not be taken care of by these countries and triggered a humanitarian catastrophe . As a result, several countries, including Austria, took over the medical care of these camps. With pioneer soldiers and its medical service, Austria looked after a camp of approx. 25,000 refugees on Iranian territory in the area of the border triangle with Iraq and Turkey not far from the city of ORUMYIEH.

The commanders and medical directors of the field hospital were the later section head in the Federal Ministry of Health Robert Schlögel, as well as the later medical chief and commander of the medical school of the Austrian Armed Forces Brigadier Thomas Treu .
