UNIVAC 1103
The UNIVAC 1103 , also called ERA 1103 and ATLAS II , was a UNIVAC computer system designed by Engineering Research Associates (ERA) and built by Remington Rand in 1953. Among other things, the UNIVAC 1103 was designed by Seymour Cray .
Little did Remington Rand know until 1953 that the machine was even being developed. The UNIVAC 1103 was designed in secrecy for the NSA under the code name Atlas II and delivered in 1952. Since the management of Remington Rand did not have a sufficiently high security classification, only the people directly involved knew about the existence of this computer. In 1953, the NSA allowed the machine to be commercialized on the condition that some specific instructions were removed from the adding machine. Remington Rand published the machine in 1953 under the name UNIVAC 1103.
Orders were received from Boeing , Lockheed , NASA and White Sands Missile Range within a short period of time . However, Remington Rand struggled to transition to mass production and all jobs were completed too late.
The machine was delivered with the following software:
- RECO - assembler system from Remington Rand
- RAWOOP and SNAP - assembler system and floating point number interpreter from Ramo-Wooldridge Corporation
- FLIP - floating point number interpreter from Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corporation
- CHIP - Wright Field's floating point number interpreter
