Lists on the subject

The USET-80 ( Russian УСЭТ-80 ) is a 533 mm torpedo that is used on submarines of the Russian Navy.

The weapon was first entered into service with the Soviet Navy in 1980 and can be used to attack surface ships and submarines.

construction

The cylindrical body of the 7.9 meter long weapon has a diameter of 533 mm and is driven by a propeller that can accelerate it up to 48  knots . A silver-zinc accumulator serves as the energy source , which supplies enough energy to propel the 2 ton torpedo at depths of up to 1,000 meters over distances of up to 18,000 meters. In the front part of the torpedo body are the sensors for targeting, followed by the warhead filled with 200 to 300 kg of explosives, the propulsion systems and finally the rudders.

functionality

The torpedo is loaded into a 533 mm torpedo tube , which is filled with seawater shortly before launch. The sea water activates the silver-zinc accumulator in the torpedo.

After launch, the torpedo searches for its target through active or passive search with its built-in sonar . Alternatively, it pursues goals via the wake search, in which it follows the turbulence generated by ships or submarines in their wake .
