The USS Croatan (CVE-25) (also AVG-25, ACV-25, T-CVHE-25, T-CVU-25 and AKV-43 ) was an escort carrier of the Bogue / Prince William class .
history
The ship was on April 15, 1942 at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corporation in Kiel set, the launch was followed on August 3, 1942. After putting on 28 April 1943, traveled Croatan several transport and anti-submarine operations in the Atlantic. The escort carrier was involved with his aircraft and escort ships in the sinking of six German submarines. In November 1945 it sailed between France and the east coast as part of Operation Magic Carpet . After the war, the Croatan was decommissioned and placed in reserve. In 1958 the escort carrier was reactivated and assigned to the MSTS as T-CVHE-25 and used with civilian crew for aircraft transport. Since May 7, 1959, it had the identification T-AKV-43, which identified it as an aircraft ferry.
Between October 27, 1964 and May 1965, the Croatan was used as a test ship by NASA in the South Pacific. During this period, rocket starters for rocket probes (English Sounding Rockets ) of the type Nike Cajun and Nike Apache , tracking antennas and cameras were installed on the rear of the ship . The hangar accommodated the extensive equipment.
Until the decommissioning on October 23, 1969, the Croatan drove again aircraft transport for the MSTS. On September 15, 1970, it was finally struck from the registers and sold as scrap in 1971.
