USS Saipan
USS Saipan is the name of two ships in the United States Navy . They are named after the island of Saipan , one of the northern Mariana Islands , for which a major battle was fought during World War II .
- The first Saipan (CVL-48) entered service as a light aircraft carrier in 1946, then converted to the Arlington Command Ship (AGMR-2) and returned to service in 1966. The ship was actively in service until 1970.
- The second Saipan (LHA-2) was an amphibious assault ship of the Tarawa-class amphibious assault ship , which was from 1977 to 2007 on active duty.
