The United States Patent and Trademark Office (PTO or USPTO) is the United States Department of Commerce assumed Patent Office of the United States , the patents for inventions awards and for the establishment of brand and intellectual property rights is responsible. It has been based in Alexandria, Virginia, since 2006 .
history
The legal basis is the American Constitution.
"The Congress shall have Power [...] To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries"
The associated first patent law was passed in 1790. The patent authority became the Secretary of State , who appointed a Superintendent of Patents with an attached staff. The agency itself was founded in 1836 under the Secretary of States and directed by the Commissioner of Patents . All patents prior to 1836 are unnumbered and can therefore only be identified by name and date. In 1849 the patent office was subordinated to the Ministry of the Interior and in 1925 to the Ministry of Commerce.

The patent authority is led by the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office . He is nominated by the President of the United States and must be approved by the Senate .

- Office of the Chief Financial Officer
