The law on environmental impact assessment (UVPG) is a law in the Federal Republic of Germany . It regulates the assessment of the environmental impact of projects which, due to their type, size or location, can have significant effects on the environment.

The purpose of this law is to ensure that in certain public and private projects as well as in certain plans and programs for effective environmental protection according to uniform principles,

  • the effects on the environment in the context of environmental assessments (environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment) are determined, described and assessed at an early stage and comprehensively,
  • The results of the environmental assessments carried out are taken into account as early as possible in all official decisions on the admissibility of projects and in the preparation or modification of plans and programs.
