Ujjayi

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ujjayi (उज्जायी ujjāyī f. "The victorious"), also Ujjayi breathing, is a breathing technique ( pranayama ) that is used in yoga . It is often used when practicing asanas (= physical exercises). It ensures that you breathe more deeply and consciously and promotes breath control. Ujjayi is also used as a pure breathing exercise and as a meditation technique, focusing on the sound of the throat.

In Ujjayi breathing, the windpipe is pulled together a little so that the air flowing through it creates a breathy sound. The constriction can be learned by first breathing in and out loudly “Haaa” with your mouth open while breathing in and out and then closing your mouth, but maintaining the constriction of the windpipe.
