Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2015

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulchi Freedom Guardian 2015 , Ulchi Freedom Guardian 15 , UFG 2015 or UFG 15 is a maneuver by the South Korean Armed Forces and the United States Combined Forces Command (CFC).

30,000 US and 50,000 South Korean soldiers take part in the maneuver. In addition, soldiers from the following nations are involved in the maneuver: Australia, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. The NNSC has sent observers. Although the CFC emphasizes that UFG was planned for months and is part of the Ulchi Freedom Guardian series, North Korea has protested violently against this maneuver. The military exercise was scheduled to run from August 17-28, 2015, but was suspended on August 19.

On August 4, two South Korean soldiers were mutilated by land mines in the demilitarized zone . This leads to a dramatic escalation of events. A United Nations Command (UNC) investigation found that North Korea had planted landmines along a well-known South Korean patrol route, but Pyongyang, North Korea, denied it. Seoul (South Korea, South) responded with loudspeaker propaganda in the DMZ that it had discontinued years earlier. In response, the north also reactivated its propaganda broadcasts.

On August 20, the countries exchanged artillery fire across the border. The north announced that it would put its troops in combat readiness. The North threatened to take military action if the South did not stop broadcasting before the 48-hour deadline. The US and South Korea took the unusual step of temporarily halting the UFG military exercise after the artillery exchange.

On August 21, David Shear , Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs , told the press that the maneuver would be resumed.

After three days of negotiations, Seoul and Pyongyang announced an agreement that included expressions of regret but with no direct apology from the north over the landmine attack. Seoul agreed to stop its propaganda broadcasts and the nations agreed to continue the dialogue in the future.
